Digestion can have a profound effect on overall energy: feelings of sluggishness versus good energy and vitality. Digestion improves and is more efficient on a plant-based diet, (Tuohy, KM et al, 2014), another advantage offered by the 6-Day Vegan Diet.
Overall we know that a high fiber diet is very healthy for the digestive tract. People who eat the most fruits, veggies, and whole grains are also the people who are eating the highest amounts of fiber. They lose more weight, and stay leaner than do meat eaters. (Karl, JP 2012; De Pergola, G 2013.)
You can expect improved regularity when following a plant-based diet. Many people who adopt a whole food plant-based diet find that they are rid of issues like constipation they may have suffered for years. By contrast, many low-carb diets are known to actually “cause” constipation.
A common reported side-effect of going completely plant-based is bloating and stomach distention. This doesn’t happen a lot but it is reported as a common occurrence when someone is first “breaking vegan.” This may happen at first because the digestive system isn’t accustomed to the diet, fiber intake in particular.
Research shows that this kind of bloating tends to dissipate within 2 to 3 weeks (Center of Nutrition Studies, 2017). Just stick with it; the issue will likely resolve itself. Increasing water intake may help as can smaller more frequent meals.
I have personally never experienced this issue, and only a few of my clients have, but I mention it because it can happen. If it does, just pay attention to your meals. Sometimes it’s just a specific food or two that’s the culprit. Also, over-the-counter remedies like Gas-X or Beano can help bloating and related issues.
